She is a guitar virtuoso. Under the name Gia G, the US girl Gia Federico releases her debut EP with “Cosmic Wave”. After four singles have already been released in a two-year rhythm since 2013. That doesn’t sound like much, but on the side she is also the guitarist for Devil In The Mist, an alternative metal band. But here, too, there is hardly more than a few singles and an EP. Joe Satriani, Eddi van Halen and Jimi Hendrix, among others, are mentioned as references. Otherwise, the press information is silent on details about the guitarist.
Gia recorded three songs for this EP. First we hear the title track “Cosmic Wave”. You can almost hear the cosmic vibrations. A mixture of Groove and Rock / Pop. In the video you can really enjoy the musical skills of the guitarist. Although the sound is fundamentally different from Jimi Hendrix, she is similar to her great idol in one way: she plays with her left hand. And picks the chords on the guitar neck with her right. “Reminiscing” is much quieter. The ballad on the EP. You think the guitar is sobbing. I can’t help but think of the Beatles’ big hit “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”. The best usually comes at the end, and this EP is no exception. The use of the tremolo in “Intrical Fusion” is fantastic. Plus the incredibly fast and numerous changes of fingerings on the guitar frets.
An impressive performance by Gia Federico. With her guitar skills, she doesn’t have to hide behind the big names listed as influences. Her two comrades-in-arms provide the solid basis for an excellent EP. A word about the artist’s name. It reminds me a lot of the Greek guitarist Gus G. And Gia really honours this name, virtuosos among themselves. How about a full-length album by Gia G?
