The Symphonic Doom Metal band Infirmum was founded in Finland in 2019. It emerged from the Black/Doom Metal solo project Kuolonkoura by multi-instrumentalist Timo Solonen. The debut album ‘Walls of Sorrow’ was released in 2020. Two years later, the EP ‘The Great Unknown’ was released. The most drastic line-up change was probably that of the female vocals. Anna Rose left the band. A replacement was quickly found in Sabine Blodwin from Brazil. Now the second album ‘From The Depths I Cried’ is finished.

At just over nine minutes, ‘The Pact’ is the longest song on the album. It is briefly introduced by spherical soundscapes. But soon the gloom takes over. Then the abysmally evil growls of bassist Taka Eliel can be heard. This is countered by the ethereal vocals of Sabine Blodwin. The underlying keyboard tapestry adds to the darkness. Together with the guitar riffs. ‘Everlasting’ is even calmer. Even more emotional and theatrical. Up and down swelling keys can be heard. But also, guitar melodies.  Once again, the interplay of Beauty and the Beast can be heard. In addition to the heavy guitars, ‘Burn’ also features hard drumming. Compared to before, some of the guitar passages sound almost upbeat. And the singer performs in high notes. This contrast of gloominess and slightly faster sections provides a lot of contrast. The double bass also contributes to this. There are heavy riffs at the beginning of ‘Deception’. The drums set the rhythm. You can clearly hear the cello here. An interesting splash of colour that you don’t hear too often in Doom Metal. ‘Peace’ starts with wind noises and surprisingly clean guitars. At first, the cello leads the melody. Calm and contemplative, even balladesque. But soon nasty growls kick in. The calm is over. But you can also hear her enchanting clear voice again. In between, there are always contemplative parts. A real rollercoaster ride. In contrast, ‘Ephemeral’ is almost epic. Here too, Taka growl like crazy. The song is particularly effective thanks to the guitar and cello solos. And the electric piano outro. In the final song ‘Icamiabas’, the Finns go brute for the last time. After the initial twittering of birds has come to an end. But here, too, melodic passages are repeatedly incorporated. In addition to the grow’, Sabine Blodwin also lets her clear soprano sound again and again.

With ‘From The Depths I Cried’, Infirmum have put out a fine piece of Atmospheric Doom Metal. An album that scores with variety. For me, the versatility of Sabine Blodwin’s voice is outstanding. And her partner Taka Eliel’s growls are as evil as you don’t often hear.
