“OBITUARY” SELF TITLED CD REVIEW

The self titled Obituary album surprised me more than I had thought it would have. I anticipated the album and got it the day it was released on March 17 which was St. Patrick’s day (which is kinda special because my name is Patrick) the first song Brave starts off propelling faster and then you are hit with John Tardy’s distinctive vocals that are probably my personal favorite within the classic Tampa Florida Death scene. His vocals are as rough and brutal as they always are. The riff is very thrashy and perfect for headbanging and moshing to. The next song Sentence Day is awesome because the second I heard it I was reminded of Into the Crypts of Rays by Celtic Frost which is totally awesome, Obituary is known for carrying the legacy of albums like Morbid Tales in their riffs. The third track A Lesson in Vengeance is one of the best off the album, it’s full of heavy riffs and good melodies, this song reminds me of songs like Institutionalized by Suicidal Tendencies and Circle of the Tyrants by Celtic Frost because of the upbeat energetic riff and the intro to the song has a similar intro to the Celtic Frost Song, the guitar solo is amazing and proves that Obituary is here to stay. Another great song on this album is Straight to Hell, it sounds like something that would be on their Cause of Death album because it starts off mid paced with awesome grooves and then has a slow crushing section in the middle where the vocals are just so menacing, one of the heaviest songs the band has released! The song Ten Thousand Ways to Die is very melodic and has the best guitar solo on the album and probably one of if not my favorite guitar solo by Obituary this song feels like a mix between old Obituary and some melodic death metal.

The production on this album is flawless it feels more raw than their previous albums yet still you can hear everything clearly just like on the Cause of Death album. I finally got to see these guys perform live on March 22nd with Kreator and it was an outstanding performance! Obituary are always known to have some of the best shows in Death Metal. If you haven’t checked out the new self titled Obituary album, I’d recommend you do it right away because chances are, you’re gonna love it! 10/10
