Release the Titans is the brainchild of guitarist Pål Olsen. Before that, he played for 25 years in the Norwegian Power Metal band Guardians of Time, of which he was a founding member. In 2021, things seemed to have run out of steam. That’s when Release the Titans was born, initially as a one-man band. Pål took care of songwriting, vocals and guitar. In the meantime, a full band was formed. After countless single releases, the debut album ‘Odyssey’ is now complete.

After a quiet piano introduction, ‘Dawning Of Man’ develops into a great mid-tempo Metal anthem with beautiful guitar melodies. The Norwegians then pick up the pace a little on ‘World Ablaze’. But still remain highly melodic. Pål Olsen’s vocals vary between clear and slightly raspy. And he also tries his hand to growl, but it hardly sounds evil. Even ‘Exodus’ is anthemic and initially moves in the mid-tempo range. Later there are fast riffs. And fast guitar solos to match. The tempo also remains high on ‘Sole Survivor’. Once again, you can hear subtle growls. The guitar at the beginning of ‘God of War’ sounds technically alienated. But fortunately, the band rock straight forward again later on. The next anthem follows with ‘Sea Of Tranquility’. In contrast, ‘Horizons Beyond’ is classic high-speed Hard Rock. With occasional growls. The title almost gives it away, the instrumental ‘Cryosleep’ is initially a power ballad that later turns into a mid-tempo stomper. ‘Cygnus-X1’ rocks off again. The rhythmic drums and hard riffing set the tone here. A final anthem follows at the very end with ‘Into The Unknown’.

Release the Titans like to rock. You can hear that on ‘Odyssey’ from the first to the last note. And that is exactly what the Rock fan can enjoy to the full here. The album is certainly no revelation, but it is well-played Hard Rock in the style of the eighties.
