Rioghan
Covers III
Label: Inverse Records
Out: December 15th, 2023
Playing time: 13:58

Rioghan aka Jenni Perämäki released her debut album “Different Kinds Of Losses” one year ago. She had previously produced various singles and EPs. Now the Finnish singer is following up with the EP “Covers III”, the direct successor to “Covers II“.

The cover “Toxic” (Britney Spears) is a little rockier than the original. Nevertheless, the pop song shines through again and again. The original of “Sweet Death” (King Dude feat. Shannon Funchess) is also rather trivial, although it is more in the soft Dark Rock genre. Here the cover version is much harder. The Finnish singer Tony Kaikkonen is the vocal partner here, who delivers the male part better than the King. Rioghan can actually surpass the original here. On the other hand, “Lethean” (Katatonia) falls short of the original again. A piano ballad that doesn’t even begin to reproduce the sound of the original.

It remains the case that Jenni Perämäki still doesn’t have a good hand with her cover versions. This EP can’t match the quality of the debut album either. A positive exception is the aforementioned “Sweet Death”, which prevents a lower rating.
