Siege Perilous
Creation’s Call
Out: August 23rd, 2024
Playing time: 21:03

Siege Perilous use historical events and fantasy literature in their song lyrics. No wonder, singer Shaughnessy McDaniel is a High School history teacher with a Master’s degree in history. Scott Hancock and Eric Fischer lead the plot team for a live-action role-playing game (LARP) and create fantasy stories. The band was probably founded in Evans (near Denver, Colorado) in late autumn 2021. The debut EP ‘Betrayal Of The Dracolich’ was released in October 2022. After various singles, the second EP ‘Creation’s Call’ was released in August of this year.

‘Oathsworn’ starts with the fade-in of a hard riff. And this also dominates later on. Shaughnessy McDaniel’s raspy vocals are accompanied by hard drumming. In ‘Across The Rubicon’ you can hear an almost marching riff and a powerful bass line. The icing on the cake is an ingenious twin guitar solo. The story is about the fall of the Roman Republic. The final chorus is written in Latin. ‘Sons of the Verdant’ sometimes sounds gloomy and sometimes triumphant. The musicians can show off their skills in many instrumental passages. An extremely complex and varied song. Of course, the interplay between the two guitarists is not missing here either. It’s mercilessly rocked out. ‘Creation’s Call’ is a dark song, a musical realisation of the horror ideas of H.P. Lovecraft. Whipping double bass and hard riffs are predominant here. The epic ‘Brothers Of The Five’ offers classic Power Metal. Here, the booming double bass really drives all the other musicians, including the singer. Interrupted by occasional anthemic passages.

‘Creation’s Call’ never gets boring, even on Heavy Rotation. Five gifted musicians have succeeded in creating a varied EP. The twin guitar solos are convincing the whole time. It’s just a shame that it ends after twenty-one minutes. It makes you wish for a full-length album. And, of course, a thrilling live performance.
