Sorceress of Sin from Cambridge in the United Kingdom play Melodic Power Metal. Founded in 2020, the musicians have now released their third studio album, ‘Ennea’. There have been pleasingly few line-up changes since the band was founded, with just one new bass player. Does this continuity also guarantee high quality? At least in their home country, the band seems to be popular live. The highlight so far was probably their performance at the legendary Bloodstock Open Air in 2021. The current work seems to be a concept album, as it deals with Greek mythology, in particular the gods of Olympus.

We hear powerful Melodic Power Metal on ‘Odyl’. Lisa Skinner’s vocals are hard and uncompromising. Only during the refrain can you be sure that this is actually a woman’s voice. It continues with Melodic Power Metal. ‘Reina’ picks up where “Odyl” left off. The singer is driven to top performance by the booming drums. Synths can be heard in the background. ‘Poseidon’ captivates with catchy melodies. Once again, the keys provide epic instrumentation. Lisa keeps belting out Metal screams. She is a rock belter in front of the Lord. But her voice sounds powerful and expressive on the ballad ‘The Quest’. Also vulnerable in places. The darker timbre suits her exceptionally well. In ‘Nymphet’, the singer surprises with a high and clear soprano. Apart from that, she rocks hard here too. Crowned by strong guitar solos. ‘Clarity Of Confusion’ is a monumental piece with a playing time of almost twelve minutes. At first, plucked guitars are accompanied by synth strings. A calm introduction with spoken words. All in all, a great Metal anthem sounds out of the speakers later on. The vocals are varied. Screams, powerful Rock vocals, dark timbre and dramatic soprano alternate. Further spoken words introduce a quiet, contemplative section. This is accompanied by another brilliant guitar solo. This is the absolute culmination of the album, and not just because of its length. In ‘Trickster’, Lisa lets her voice vibrate before rocking out again. The drums set the rhythm again. ‘Destructive Descent’ starts with majestic riffs. But the tempo soon increases. A real uphill run. The final track is ‘Artisan’, which starts ballad-like. We can enjoy the singer’s dark timbre one last time. Then the drums thunder rhythmically. Double bass attacks whip ahead.

After every listen to ‘Ennea’, I’m more enthusiastic. What Sorceress of Sin deliver on their third album is simply outstanding. The band’s figurehead is clearly singer Lisa Skinner. She impresses with her extremely multi-faceted vocals. And her fellow musicians bring this impressive voice to life in a convincing way. A Power Metal highlight at the end of the year. What more could a Metal heart want!
