Australia is known for great metal bands. Names like AC/DC, Airbourne or Rose Tattoo are known to (almost) everyone. But also in the second row there are/were many well-known names. Vanishing Point, Wolfmother, Mortal Sin. Just to name a few. But there are also many other, less well-known bands. The most recent example is Temtris. The band was founded in Sidney in 2000, with only singer Genevieve Rodda and guitarist Anthony Fox remaining from the original line-up. Five albums have been released so far. With “Ritual Warfare” the half dozen is now full.
Rhythmic drumbeats are followed by hard-hitting guitar riffs, whipped along by the drums. And singer Genevieve Rodda belts out high-pitched metal screams. This is how the opener “Race To The End” presents itself. And musically it’s a real race, Metal with high speed. A word about the vocals. This one is powerful, in the mid to low pitch range. A voice with great recognition value. In the second half there is an almost sprawling guitar solo. Great bass line and guitar hooks can then be heard on the anthemic “One For All”. In “Seven Sins of Man”, the singer impressively proves that she can do more than just power through. In the quieter passages of this song, she shows her more gentle side. But only to go full throttle again with “Forever”. The title song “Ritual Warfare” starts with sacred chants. Then it becomes a catchy metal hymn. A song with hit potential. The two guitarists Anthony Fox and Nadi Norouzian shine with their perfect interplay during the solos. “Tempus Aeternum” is then classic heavy metal. The bass rhythm (Nick Wilks), but also the riffing would have fitted wonderfully to Dio. Somehow “Holy Diver” comes to mind. I wonder why. For me, this song is the absolute highlight of the album. It should be in heavy rotation on rock radio stations. With “Erased” the Australians go at a hell of a pace again. Driven again by drummer Nicholas Bolan. The closing song “Always United” is once again Melodic Power Metal. Thanks to the catchy riffs, this song also has airplay qualities.
“Ritual Waefare” is an above average Power Metal album. Although, “Power Metal” is not the right pigeonhole for the sound. Rather a mixture with Speed and classical Hard Rock / Heavy Metal. With this, Temtris have probably found their own niche. Excellent instrumentalists put their front woman in the limelight brilliantly. The band from Down Under is actually ready for higher metal ranks. Maybe the new label deal with Wormholedeath will help. It would be desirable.
