Wasteland Coven

In the last 10 years a number of new doom-metal-bands have formed. After Below, Northern Crown and Konvent (to name a few), Wasteland Coven are on the spot and ready for action. But unlike most of the genre colleagues, there is a woman behind the microphone. A woman who not only grunts angrily or just whispers into the microphone but sings with a lot of feeling and strength in her voice.

“Midsummer days”, the longest song on the EP at ten and a half minutes, starts with a bass and keyboard intro before the typical doom riffs gain the upper hand and the song drones dark and heavy from the speakers. With the onset of singing, the epic factor is driven upwards. In between there is also a bass solo and the song is also accompanied by keyboard and strings. The only sticking point that tarnishes the listening pleasure a little is the singing that is mixed too far into the background. As a result, the voice cannot really develop and carry the composition. The potential for this is definitely there.

In “Great Colossus” the really fast guitar solo in the middle section is surprising. The vocals are not quite as powerful as in the first track, but still outstanding. The Americans put the best song at the end. Great riffs, impressive vocals and solos to bang along with. You couldn’t ask for much more.

Only the mix could have been better. But with such in-house productions you have to expect something like that. After all, it seems reasonable to assume that the mixing was not done professionally. Composition, arrangements, vocals are all excellent, so there is still hope that a possible album will sound even better.
