Five teenagers from Beaupré (Quebec, Canada) founded the Power Metal band Tales of Destiny in 1995. Later, things obviously became quieter around the band. After the demo ‘Fallen from the Light Path’ (2002) with four songs and the album ‘Reign of the Eclipse’ (2013), there were no further releases. The press release speaks of a break of more than ten years. Thirty years after the band was founded, the five childhood friends got back together. The current album “Ashes Of Destiny” is a kind of look back at the band’s beginnings and development, breathing new life into songs from the years 1995 to 2010.

Fast, hard and rhythmic. Dominated by guitar riffs. This is how ‘Lost Cries’ presents itself. The drums really drive it forward. Singer Bruno Pouliot belts out high Metal screams. And with all this heaviness, a twin guitar solo is a must. ‘Children Of Darkness’ is very similar. And yet, melodically different. Here too, fast riffs and booming drums dominate. The Canadians also favour a fast pace on ‘Demon Tears’. The vocals and the chorus sound slightly thrashy. The guitars squeal and screech at times. There is also another rapid-fire guitar solo, as if new speed records were to be set. In ‘Rescued By An Angel’, the drums bang right from the start and the guitars screech again. But then things get rhythmic for a moment. The Thrash hammer strikes again with the vocals and the accompanying drum thunderstorm. As if the musicians needed a short breather, the somewhat calmer metal anthem introduction to ‘The Fight For Life’ follows. OK, it often remains melodic later on, but the tempo picks up a little. The typical screams can be heard here too. ‘For My King’ is also a little more melodic. The screeching guitars on ‘Feel The Nightmare’ then switch back to high-speed mode. ‘Wild Dream’ is indeed very wild. You certainly wouldn’t want to experience such a dream with devilishly nasty screams. ‘Flame Of Victory’ is a little more rhythmic, although the drums are once again booming and driving the other musicians. With ‘Silence’, the song title is the concept. An excellent power ballad with a large anthemic portion. But Tales of Destiny can’t really be quiet throughout. It gets fast again from the halfway point. Bever the whole thing then fades out calmly. For me, this is the best song on the album. The final song ‘Night Shadow’ moves back into light thrash waters.

I don’t know what the songs sounded like thirty years ago. But ‘Ashes Of Destiny’ sounds fresh and unspent, with a rich sound. One would like to continue the wordplay of the album title. Tales Of Destiny rise like a phoenix from the ashes. The musicians have obviously lost none of their teenage bite.
