Steel-meets-steel melodic power metal
This is how the press release for the current album ‘Chapter IV’ by the Swedish Twins Crew begins. The name says it all. The two guitarists Dennis and David Janglöv are twins. And probably also the band founders. That was in 2007 in the capital Stockholm. After two EPs in 2008 and 2009, the debut album ‘Judgement Night’ was released in June 2011. Two more albums followed until 2016. Then it became quiet around the band. After nine years of waiting, the fourth album has now been completed under the more or less innovative title ‘Chapter IV’. But you shouldn’t judge an album by its name. The album was mixed and mastered by Fredrik Nordström at Studio Fredman (In Flames, Hammerfall, Dream Evil). The cover artwork was designed by Blekkmark Design Studio (TNT, Seven Witches, Bloodbound).
The opening riff of ‘Choose Your God’ is a little reminiscent of the great days of Manowar. But don’t worry, there’s no copying here. What follows is quite independent. Great melodic Power Metal. And the Janglöv twins impress for the first time with an outstanding guitar solo. ‘Never Stop Believing’ really gets things going, Power Metal at high speed. Singer Andreas Larsson easily keeps up the pace with his powerful voice. I don’t need to say anything more about the excellent guitar work. It gets a little quieter again with ‘Living In A Dream’. But only a little. Fast riffs and driving drums… It continues with a sweat-inducing tempo. ‘Warrior Of North’ is no exception. Occasional high-pitched Metal screams can be heard. ‘Fire’ is characterised by rhythmic and thunderous riffs that compete with the drums. And of course, there has to be a ballad on a Power Metal album. Quiet guitar playing and calm vocals dominate ‘Without You’. It is accompanied by a beautiful guitar melody. And another huge guitar solo. Almost seamlessly, ‘Order 69’ leads back into hard Power Metal realms. A great metal anthem with a sing-along refrain. The final song ‘Fighting For The World’ is a ballad until about halfway through. But then we hear classic Power Metal again. Later, a high-speed guitar solo is added. The end of the song is ballad-like again. A real contrast programme.
‘Chapter IV’ is a more than successful comeback album from the Twins Crew. Excellent Power Metal is celebrated here. Anthems, rhythmic stompers and Speed Metal interludes provide plenty of variety. The guitar solos are outstanding. Ballads lighten things up. I hope we don’t have to wait another nine years for the follow-up.
