WINGS of DESTINY, one of the best and most promising Latin-American power metal acts.
This is what the press release says. Six albums have been released so far. And the band has toured with Firewind & Gus G, A.N.I.M.A.L., Rhapsody Reunion, among others. The band from Costa Rica was founded in 2013 as Destiny. The name change took place two years later. The current line-up includes big names such as guitarist David Shankle (ex-Manowar) and bassist Mike Lepond (Symphony X). Their seventh album, ‘Masters Of War’, was recently released.
The intro is epic and orchestral and goes on for almost one minute. Then, without a break, the title track ‘Masters Of War’ kicks in and picks up where the orchestral melody left off. But then things really get going. The riffs and double bass blast out of the speakers. Anton Darusso sings with a raspy voice but also lets out some high-pitched screams every now and then. The high-speed mode continues on ‘Walking In Shadows’. But Power Metal always includes a guitar solo. This one is really strong. After this hard-hitting start, the tempo slows down a bit with ‘By The Dawn’. The chorus in particular is extremely melodic. Otherwise, hard riffs dominate. ‘Hear My Call’ swings back to high speeds, while remaining melodic throughout. Apart from the intro, this is the shortest song on the album. ‘Incantation’ starts off very epic and is somewhat reminiscent of the intro. But here too, Wings of Destiny take no prisoners. The drums push forward and fast guitars can be heard again and again. The chorus would do any Metal anthem proud. And with ‘Life’ follows a great, epic anthem. Although fast, ‘Obey Or Die’ is also very epic, with driving guitar riffs. The screams are downright harsh. And then the fingers race across the guitar strings again. ‘Storm Within’ is fast-paced power metal. Once again, high-pitched screams can be heard. ‘Times To Remember’ is the next Metal anthem. The much-needed time to catch your breath comes right at the end. ‘Waiting For The Sunrise’ is a magnificent power ballad.
After listening to the album several times, I can say that the label did not overstate things in the press release. ‘Masters Of War’ is one of the best Power Metal albums I’ve ever heard. It’s varied and performed by outstanding musicians. An absolute must-buy for every Heavy Metal fan!
