They hail from the City of Angels (California). And were founded in 2019. The Heavy Metal band Wings of Steel. Three years passed before the first sign of life, the self-titled EP. After that, however, things went like clockwork. After one single, the debut album ‘Gates of Twilight’ was released in 2023, followed by the live album ‘Live in France’ in 2024. And this year sees the release of ‘Winds Of Time’. The musicians have dedicated themselves to old school Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. This should particularly appeal to fans of Iron Maiden or Judas Priest.

Many albums end with a grand opus. But here, the title track ‘Winds Of Time’, which is also the longest on the album with an epic length of more than ten minutes, is right at the beginning. And the Californians really get going. Hard riffs are driven by fast drumming. And Leo Unnermark’s vocals are also really old school. With his high voice and a few screams, he is strongly reminiscent of the great days of Melodic Heavy Metal. Of course, this also includes the guitar solos, which could have come from the bands mentioned at the beginning. The melody, rhythm and tempo changes are also typical. What a kick-off. ‘Saints And Sinners’ is the shortest song on the album (less than three minutes). Here, Wings of Steel once again set a high tempo. Fuelled by high Metal screams. And the fact that a short guitar solo also fits in here is just insane. ‘Crying’ is a great Metal anthem in which the tempo is slowed down a little. With a strong refrain. But ‘Burning Sands’ already switches back into the high-speed range. But with occasional quieter passages. In the middle, hymnic melodic arcs dominate at times. After a hymnic introduction, “To Die In Holy War” also switches to high-speed realms. The singer repeatedly belts out high screams. ‘Lights Go Out’ then sounds rhythmically and majestically from the speakers. The title ‘We Rise’ suggests another high-speed cracker. But far from it. This is an outstanding anthemic power ballad with an equally outstanding guitar solo. The guitar intro to ‘Flight Of The Eagle’ hints at another ballad. And that’s exactly what it is. Even quieter than the previous song. Really contemplative and tempting to dream. At least until shortly before the end. Then Wings of Steel really get going again.

What a stunning album this is. On “Wings Of Time”, (“Heavy Metal”) time seems to have stood still. Hard Metal, great anthems and wonderful balladic sections alternate. And all this with a brilliant sound. The musicians are convincing all along the line, especially singer Leo Unnermark.
