FISHLORD drops raucous nu-metal single ‘WHAT’S YOUR NEED?’

Trinidadian-American multi-instrumentalist FISHLORD releases newest single ‘WHAT’S YOUR NEED?’ on 22nd November. Previously named Nafets, the newly rebranded artist offers a fusion of nu-metal with contemporary drum and bass loops on his debut single release.
‘WHAT’S YOUR NEED’ opens with melodic, introspective lyrics before crescendoing into a raging chorus with breakbeat drums and heavy screamo vocals, a signature element of FISHLORD’s new sound. The whirlwind of a song climaxes with a halftime breakdown, featuring a call-and-response between screaming vocals and a lead guitar. A sense of urgency — led by the quick pace of the song and the tension-building intervals of the instrumentation — permeates throughout, creating a captivating soundscape that has the audience pressing the repeat button. The lyrics reflect FISHLORD’s upbringing as a first-generation immigrant, and the struggle to express himself and get in touch with his own wants compared to the demands of those around him.
The track is the first single from FISHLORD’S debut EP, ‘WHAT’S YOUR NEED?’, a deep dive into his roots of nu metal, punk, and rock. Throughout the project, FISHLORD takes the best elements from 2000’s rock and incorporates a fresh and contemporary energy, leading to a sound that is deeply innovative, versatile and instantly engaging.
Of the song FISHLORD said,“This track will always be special to me because it was my first time doing screaming vocals. I grew up listening to a lot of metal and screamo music and had always wanted to do something like that, but never really sat down to learn the technique to practise it. But the track was really just begging for it — it’s all about finding yourself and asking questions of yourself and where you’re going, and I wanted to capture the urgency of that feeling in me. So I finally gave the screaming a go, and it changed everything for me musically. It opened up a whole new dimension of my voice and my artistry.”
Alongside the single, he drops the music video for the track which invites us inside the rampaging kaleidoscope that is FISHLORD’s creative vision. Combining animation with live action, the video is an energetic flash of colour, which mirrors the fast-pace and chaotic power of the track.
“The visuals here were shot and edited by my friend Kam Dymek and his team, who have done almost all of my visuals for the past few years.” FISHLORD says, “Up until this point, most of our work had to be done remotely because he’s based in London. All of my videos for my previous project were shot on greenscreen, and I sent him the footage and he did his magic on it. This was my first time in 5 years getting to actually shoot with him in person, and it was an absolute blast. We just wanted something to capture the energy of that internal feeling of wanting to change or sensing a part of you that needs attention.”
Outside of music, FISHLORD currently works as an English teacher in New York, with a masters degree in education from Harvard University.
