Warning: female fronted symphonic metal explosion, featuring hot pink hip whipping back cracking arena vibes laced with throwback keys and blistering leads. “Ouroboros” is ANA’s new single, filled with luscious licks, hard hooks and power-sass, put into sharp focus by the dichotomy of masked players versus the bold persona of frontwoman Anna Khristenko: vocally trained yet emotionally raw, elegant as fuck, but cocky and hot.
This band is signed to Eclipse Records for a reason, and as we all enjoy the story of ANA, unfolding itself like some beautiful butterfly out of the chrysalis, it is noteworthy that they would follow the prior release of the more ballad-like “Moth” with “Ouroboros,” a daring tune meant for metal hounds and packed saloons, big halls and rock rooms.
As for the song itself, “Ouroboros” demonstrates the importance of all the players, illustrating the idea that this a band far more than just a bunch of background musicians supporting a singer. In the solo section, Josh Mak unleashes an unforgettable tapping technique just as Tory Giamba utilizes a fascinating flutter-style on the bass (which, by-the-way, matches the color of Khristenko’s tight pants and opera gloves). Cleveland Beckford Gonzalez somehow shows off amazing hummingbird footwork underneath a backbeat meant to shake the foundations, and Matt Williamson supplies those haunting passages on keys that remind us of why we love rock so damned much. What a single. What a story.
