Down The Lees‘ highly anticipated EP, ‘Dirt‘, is out everywhere now! Featuring the award winning single, ‘Douse‘, which has already taken home ‘Best Song’ at the 2024 Okanagan Screen Awards, the EP knows no genre constriction and is a true showcase of Down The Lees’ broad sonic strengths – putting a spotlight on their range and versatility.
On the release, bandleader / founder Laura Lee Schultz comments:
“As the next phase of Down The Lees started to unfold, I was lucky to be able to find musicians so talented and passionate about this type of music. Hard, abrasive, melodic and dare I say, beautiful at times.
Playing with Chris and Andy is full of feel – which is what every band wants, a connection that is hard to describe but you can hear it and feel it. I bring the skeleton of a song to the band and we finish it together. Recording this EP with Jesse perfectly captured what we had hoped to achieve and we are so happy with the result. We recorded these songs in a very natural, unforced way as we get each other’s musical references and know where the song ideas want to go.”
Recorded and mixed by Jesse Gander at Raincity Recorders (3 Inches of Blood, Brutus, Japandroids, Misery Signals, Comeback Kid, Dead Quiet), mastered by Blake Bickel at Dynamic Sound Service (The Lucky Strikes, Bleeding Light Records), and packaged with mesmerizing artwork by Mirabelle Van de Put, ‘Dirt’ deserves a front-to-back listen, but remains just as appealable on a track-by-track basis.

Emerging from Vancouver’s dynamic music scene, Down The Lees weaves a sonic tapestry in their music, characterized by thunderous guitars, raucous bass lines, and pulsating drums – all complemented by founder Laura Lee Schultz‘s vocals, delivering the undeniable harsh truths of life with simultaneous grace and force. The band initially took shape as a solo project led by Schultz’s creative force, renowned for her work with Queazy, Skinjobs, and New Years Resolution. Evolving over time, the project has produced three albums, an EP, and a diverse array of singles exploring post-rock, shoegaze, hardcore, slowcore, and no-wave.
Undergoing a transformative phase in Belgium, Down The Lees transitioned into a vibrant live band. In 2020, the European chapter embarked on a tour featuring the critically acclaimed album ‘Bury The Sun,’ produced by the legendary SteveAlbini. This tour spanned Belgium, France, and The Netherlands, culminating in an invitation to share the stage with the Sisters of Mercy in Italy.
In response to the global pandemic, the project briefly paused, prompting Laura Lee’s return to Canada for a period of self-care and reflection. Undeterred by challenges, she channeled global adversity into the creation of new music. With the anticipation of a return to normalcy, a Canadian incarnation of the band emerged, introducing seasoned professionals Chris Carlson on bass and Andy Ashley on drums.
