Beneath the boughs of the ancient trees, their canopies bathed in pale moonlight and dusted in the silver magic of the stars, the darkness is rich and deep, all-enveloping. And in this place where shadows entwine with shadows, she sits in reverence upon the cushion of moss and pine needles which cover the dark loam that holds safe the bones of all the women who have gone before her. She calls to them in the old tongue…and they come, their spirits surrounding her. The night is filled with music; with songs of blood and time, melancholy melodies of days lost and faded sunsets, paeans to a world forgotten, poems without words…
“Listen to them, the children of the night. What music they make!”
– Bram Stoker, Dracula
Hungarian duo WitcheR are purveyors of the most atmospheric and enthralling black metal, their songs imbued with strange sorcery and dreamlike visions. Their spirit reaches back into the past, wandering far from the soulless, industrialised world of today. Their last album, 2022s captivating and critically acclaimed Lélekharang, concluded with a beautiful interpretation of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, Op. 27. No. 2. I. Adagio Sostenuto and with their new EP, Boszorkányszimfóniák, they have wandered even further down this pastoral path, bringing vital, vibrant new life to works by Tchaikovsky, Händel, Grieg, Chopin, Vaughan Williams and Carl Orff. The results are magical; WitcheR working with the genius of the classical creators and drawing the incredible works through a musical portal, into the band’s own unique world of lay and lore. Each breathtaking piece possesses both grand, cinematic qualities and a sense of whispered secrets and hidden paths. The EP then concludes with a new version of WitcheR’s own ‘Summernight Melancholy’ which provides the perfect closing chapter to this journey through grand imagination. Such is the inspired creative fire burning within Boszorkányszimfóniák that it stands as a towering edifice in WitcheR’s hallowed catalogue of work and a peerless addition to the atmospheric black metal genre.
Boszorkányszimfóniák is available now on digital, CD and cassette formats from Filosofem Records, adorned in the evocative, sepia-toned artwork of Grafit & Hamu Artworks (Hamvak, Moor etc). Grasp the outstretched hand of WitcheR and let them lead you into a dream, a reverie of wonder. Boszorkányszimfóniák will transport you to places you have sensed but never seen.
