Desert Near The End’s sixth studio album, “Tides of Time”, is a masterclass in blending ferocious power metal with atmospheric depth, symphonic flourishes, and emotional storytelling. The album, set to release on December 6, represents a significant creative milestone for the band, continuing their tradition of innovation while staying true to their core essence.

From the very first note of “City of Eternal Flame” the album grabs hold with an unrelenting energy. This opening track is a thunderous declaration of intent, weaving sharp-edged riffs and death metal undertones into the band’s epic power metal foundation. It’s a track that feels both familiar and daring, in harmony with Desert Near The End’s ever-evolving-while-staying-true approach.

“Ascension immediately follows with a commanding presence, its rhythmic march evoking the imagery of an unstoppable force, an army marching to conquest. Built on a power/thrash base, it layers intricate riffs and rhythmic precision, offering a battle hymn-like anthem that is both intense and invigorating. On a slight twist to freshen things up and add a bit of flare, “Oceans of Time” takes a melodic turn, introducing neo-classical touches and a surprisingly catchy chorus. The song strikes a perfect balance between the band’s signature intensity and a lighter, more melodic approach that fits just right with the band’s power metal background.

On the other hand “Children of Lethe” shifts the album into darker, gothic influenced territory. Haunting melodies and atmospheric tones dominate the track, with powerful vocal lines and a breathtaking epic finale that lingers in the mind. It’s a song that encapsulates the band’s ability to weave raw power with something that is seemingly out of their usual range, yet they manage to fit it in that darker, more delicate tone into their sound.

“Half Learned and Long Forgotten” introduces symphonic undercurrents that feel subtle yet integral, adding dimension without overshadowing the track’s heavy, riff-driven foundation. These elements take center stage in “Sunset Fields” where a cinematic orchestral intro transitions into slow, monumental doom riffs. This track is perhaps the album’s most evocative, painting vivid imagery through sound.

The energy ramps back up with “Burn Like the Sun, Shine Like the Dawn” a return to the band’s power/thrash roots. Fast-paced and exhilarating, the track’s medieval-inspired melodic passage adds a fresh twist that feels both unexpected and perfectly placed.

“Damnation” stands in an aura inspired by Dante’s “The Devine Comedy”, its majestic tone supported by thundering drums, stunning melodic leads, and an exceptional vocal duet. The interplay of ominous atmospheres and powerful instrumentation elevates this track to one of the album’s defining moments, leaving an indelible mark.

The closing track, “In the North of Every Man’s Heart” is a dynamic ballad that trades the album’s characteristic intensity for a more reflective, chilling tone. Its smooth delivery and emotional resonance provide a fitting conclusion, tying together the album’s themes of time, emotion, and epic storytelling.

“Tides of Time” is a testament to Desert Near The End’s ability to evolve while maintaining their identity. The album masterfully balances razor-sharp riffs, soaring melodies, and symphonic flourishes, all anchored by an emotional depth that resonates throughout. Each track feels distinct, yet they collectively contribute to a cohesive narrative, making the album an immersive experience. Desert Near The End pushes boundaries and cements their place among the most innovative bands in the power metal sphere. It’s not just an album; it’s a journey—a bold, epic, and deeply satisfying adventure that will captivate both long-time fans and newcomers alike.
