Just one year after they formed, I had the chance to see the Swedish band Rexoria live, as the opening act on Bloodbound and Crystal Viper’s 2017 Dragons & Witches Tour. They have released three albums to date, the most recent being ‘Imperial Dawn’ (2023). Lead singer Frida Ohlin really won me over. So, naturally, I was keen to hear the follow-up, ‘Fallen Dimension’. The album was mixed and mastered by Jonas Kjellgren (Sabaton, Bloodbound, Dynazty). With Mike Andersson (Tungsten) and Johnny Gioeli (Axel Rudi Pell / Hardline), you can hear two renowned Rock and Metal singers performing a duet with Frida.
‘Metallic Rain’ kicks off with spoken words coming through a rather poor sound system. But soon enough I can hear the band just as I’m used to. Frida Ohlin sings with a powerful, slightly scratchy voice – driven on by her bandmates. Lead guitarist Jonas Gustavsson gets his first chance to shine. Anyone who isn’t wide awake by now will be woken up by ‘Awakening’ at the latest. And can then sing along loudly to the refrain. ‘Dancing On The Ruins’ comes across as a little calmer and more rhythmic. After a quiet introduction with a few technical gadgets, ‘Malleus Maleficarum’ continues with plenty of punch. Although not listed in the line-up, synths can be heard throughout. The synths then lead into ‘Running With The Stars’. Singer Frida Ohlin lets herself be driven by the drums. ‘Dominion’ also begins quietly, but later develops into a great Power Metal anthem, complete with Manowar-esque guitar riffs. Frida is supported vocally by Mike Andersson. With ‘Break The Wave’, the pace picks up again. This is followed in quick succession by two further Metal anthems: ‘Himalaya’ and ‘Wasted Land’. ‘Virtual Pain’ also keeps the tempo high. Frida is once again driven by her bandmates. But Rexoria have saved the best for last – the epic power ballad ‘Heart Of Sorrow’. Frida’s brilliant duet partner is Johnny Gioeli. Simply outstanding.
On ‘Fallen Dimension’, too, Rexoria deliver high-level Power Metal. Lead singer Frida Ohlin’s vocals are beyond reproach. The album is, of course, crowned by two outstanding duet partners. But what would the best singer be without her instrumentalists? And they do a very good job, driving their ‘boss’ to peak performance. Now I just need the chance to experience Rexoria live again.
