‘Inhale The Noise’ marks a new step forward for GODSNAKE: harder, more aggressive and more diverse than ever, yet firmly rooted in the band’s signature blend of melodic hooks, the energy of thrash metal and catchy choruses that get under your skin.
About six years ago, I had the chance to have a proper listen to the debut album ‘Poison Thorn’ by the Hamburg-based thrashers Godsnake. At that point, the band had already been around for a few years. They must have formed around 2013 or 2014. According to Encyclopaedia Metallum, the EP ‘Hellbound Ride’ was released in May 2014. I saw Godsnake live in 2017 at the Heavy Metal Night at Marias Ballroom. Their second album, ‘Eye for an Eye’ (2023), somehow passed me by. Their third album, ‘Inhale the Noise’, is now due for release in April.
‘Scream For A Bullet’ kicks off with heavy thrash riffs driven by powerful drums. The vocals sound raw, even during the melodic chorus. In contrast, the guitars on ‘Lost & Forgotten’ sound more melodic. Once again, drummer Sidney drives his bandmates forward. The title track ‘Inhale The Noise’ lives up to its name. Here, the thrash hammer is brought out and the band powers through relentlessly, without, however, neglecting the melodic elements. Strings and clean guitars initially dominate ‘Enemy Of Great’. Even when the rhythm section kicks in later, the melodies remain mostly catchy. Here, Godsnake demonstrate just how well Power Metal, Thrash and ballad-like sections go together. A highlight of the album, featuring a strong guitar solo. A guitar fade-in opens “Rotten To The Core”, before rhythmic yet heavy riffs take over. The vocals are rougher here too. At the start of ‘Place To Call Home’, the band from the North set a fast pace, slowing it down slightly later on. Once again, the melodic chorus is impressive. The short ‘Digital Dumbass’ is then pure high-speed Thrash. For a change, ‘Fear Is The Key’ is calm. Beautiful guitar melodies are underpinned by epic keyboards and vocals. An outstanding Power Thrash anthem. It remains varied. ‘Creator Of Shame’ really gets the party started, in the mid-tempo range. Do we even need to mention the catchy choruses? The closing track, ‘The Price We Have To Pay’, is yet another true Thrash banger.
After really enjoying ‘Poison Thorn’, Godsnake didn’t disappoint me on ‘Inhale the Noise’ either. On the contrary, in my view, this is a step up from their debut. Godsnake manage the fine line between Thrash and Power Metal – between hard-hitting riffs, plenty of anthemic, melodic passages and ballad-like interludes – very well.
