Desolate Pathway, a band founded in 2014 in Kent (UK) by former Pagan Altar guitarist Vinny Konrad, originally consisted of four musicians. Since then, there have been numerous line-up changes, particularly on bass. The band disbanded in 2022. Two studio albums had been released by that point. The songs for the third album had been written, and some had even already been recorded. In 2026, at least three of the former band members reunited. The album was completed and is due to be released in September via Meuse Music Records. Desolate Pathway are now apparently just a duo.
‘Creeper’ begins with a heavy yet doom-like, calm guitar melody. After the drums come in subtly, the vocals join in, calm and carried by rhythmic riffs in the background. The guitar solo that follows is really powerful and plays its part in creating the gloomy atmosphere. ‘Horrors Of The Night’ is then a little slower-paced, though no less gloomy. Once again, the guitar melodies dominate before Vinny Konrad’s distinctive vocals kick in. The drummer reinforces the gloom with her subtly employed rhythms. Later on, the harsh vocals are underpinned by heavy, distorted riffs. And what can one say? Desolate Pathway remain true to their style in the following tracks too – whether it’s ‘The Dark Prince’, ‘Dawn Of Extinction’ or even ‘Angels Without Words’ – calm, almost contemplative sounds predominate, whilst the drums are used very sparingly. Only ‘Deadly Beauty’ and ‘Vampires Kiss’ are now and then a tiny bit faster. But even these are strongly characterised by the riffs and the calm drumming. The title track ‘Visions In Death’, which comes right at the end, then delivers a few crashing riffs once more.
‘Visions In Death’ is an album for moments of reflection, provided you’re into doom metal. Vinny Konrad’s subdued vocals and heavy yet equally subdued guitar riffs and melodies create a sense of gloom throughout the entire album. This is supported and enhanced by Mags’ gentle drumming. Despite all that, I never find the songs boring. Basically, I like it.
