The Greek Rock and Metal band Elysion was founded in 2006 by singer Maxi Nil and guitarist Johnny Zero. After Maxi left the band just two years later, Christianna took over on vocals. With her on board, the band released their debut album, ‘Silent Scream’, in 2009. The EP ‘Killing My Dreams’ (2012) was followed by ‘Someplace Better’ in 2014. After that, there was a somewhat longer hiatus. It would take nine years before their third album, ‘Bring Out Your Dead’, was released. Fortunately, however, fans didn’t have to wait quite so long for ‘Identity’.
A few synth sounds introduce ‘Do Or Die’ before singer Christianna begins to sing softly. But hard riffs kick in straight away, without, however, significantly increasing the tempo. A melodic opening. On ‘Guardian Angel’ the guitars pound away right from the start. A little faster, but just as melodic. The singer’s dark timbre suits the hard riffs perfectly. The whole thing is rounded off by a strong guitar solo. ‘Dead Loves’ also begins with a synth intro, before heavy riffs and gentle guitar chords alternate later on. Layers of keyboard add a touch of grandeur. Once again, the band stays within the mid-tempo range. On ‘The Last Ride’, Christianna’s ethereal vocals are contrasted by the menacing growls of Konstantinos Togas (Nightrage, Herta). Afterwards, the power ballad ‘Declaration Of Darkness’ provides a moment of rest. The singer initially shows her soulful side. But there’s no shortage of heavier sounds and vocal passages either. ‘Phoenix’ is characterised in parts by heavy, pounding riffs. Later on, Christianna’s technically distorted voice can be heard, underpinned by industrial sounds. Essentially, however, what you hear is powerful mid-tempo Metal. Following a brief synth intro, ‘Gravity’ is also riff-heavy and driven by heavy drumming. A further vocal partner can be heard on ‘Harvest’. Sakis Tolis (Rotting Christ) lends a heavier edge with his growls. Consequently, Christianna’s clear voice also sounds a little harder. Thanks to its riffs, ‘Moment In Time’ is also one of the heavier tracks on the album. Once again, you can enjoy Christianna’s powerful, dark timbre. ‘Broken’, on the other hand, is a slightly more ‘well-behaved’ melodic Metal song. The album concludes with ‘Nighttime Whispers’, the second ballad on the album. The enchanting vocals are accompanied by acoustic and subtly employed electric guitars.
‘Identity’ is worth listening to and is a varied melodic Metal album. Most of the tracks are mid-tempo and very catchy. On two of the eleven tracks, harsh growls give them a harder edge. None of this is particularly new, of course. But Christianna’s clear and powerful voice is showcased well by the instrumentalists.
