Storm Force is the explosive band that fans of classic hard melodic rock have all been waiting for.
Once again, I can’t help but smile whilst reading a press release. However, in all seriousness – Storm Force are fronted by a Canadian Rock legend. Guitarist Greg Fraser was the founder of the Rock band Brighton Rock from Niagara Falls. Three albums were released between 1982 and 1992. After the split, there was apparently a reunion (2001–2020), though no further studio albums were released. Storm Force were presumably formed in 2020, following the definitive break-up of Brighton Rock. That was the year their debut album, ‘Age Of Fear’, was released. The follow-up (?) ‘Truth’ is due for release in September.
The album kicks off with the title track ‘Truth’, which is introduced by gentle guitars and a few light drum rolls. But then the riffs kick in and Patrick Gagliardi sings in a rough voice. It’s somewhat reminiscent of Accept, at least their slightly calmer tracks. A fine mid-tempo Metal song. The powerful Rock song ‘Silver Lining’ is introduced by twin-guitar melodies. These can be heard time and again later on. Things get catchy with ‘Saviour’. Uplifting AOR that could well have come from the US West Coast. In this track, Storm Force seem to have captured the sunshine. A real earworm. But the Canadians are also masters of ballads, as they demonstrate with ‘Between The Lines’. ‘Anti Social Media’ is once again introduced by riffs and heavy drums. Despite the driving drums, the band remains firmly in the mid-tempo range. As with the previous tracks, there’s a catchy yet high-quality guitar solo to be heard. ‘Fire Starter’ takes us back to classic ’80s Rock. Is ‘On With The Show’ the next ballad, as the opening’s beautiful guitar melody would have us believe? No, once the tempo picks up, Storm Force really get rocking here too. ‘You’re Never Alone’ is pure Arena Rock. This is followed by ‘I Wasn’t Finished Loving You’, a power ballad well worth a listen. Initially, the gentle vocals are accompanied by a piano and strings. Even when the drums and, later, the guitars kick in, the tempo only increases slightly. This track simply invites you to dream. The closing track, “Karma’s A Bitch”, delivers that genuine Rock vibe once again.
Are Storm Force really the band we’ve all been waiting for? That’s probably a bit of literary overstatement. There are plenty of bands who indulge in this musical style, and for the most part they do so well to very well. So, although we weren’t really waiting for Storm Force, the Canadians deliver an interesting splash of colour to the world of Melodic Rock/Metal. They take us on a journey back in time to the glorious 80s of the last century. And they do so with great confidence.
