What I could only assume in my review of their self-titled debut album is now stated in the latest press release: Ström were founded in 2019. Their 2022 debut was followed two years later by ‘En Orkan På Vår Sida’. That one somehow slipped my attention. So ‘Mer Ström Åt Folket’, due out in October, is already the Swedish hard rockers’ third album. And in keeping with tradition, the lyrics are once again written in the band’s native language. And as there has only been one line-up change so far (Adam Butler is the new bassist), it’s safe to assume that Ström are a well-rehearsed band. So, the conditions are ideal for yet another top-class album.
Right from the opener, ‘Mer Strom At Folket’, it’s clear that Ström haven’t changed their musical concept at all – or at least not by much. It’s riff-heavy in the style of AC/DC, D-A-D and other hard rock bands. And, of course, Zdravko Zizmond’s raspy voice is an integral part of it. And during the twin-guitar solo, the Swedes demonstrate that they have skilled guitarists in their ranks. ‘Guld & Prima’ kicks off with soaring screams. What follows is Hard Rock at its best. Here, too, the track is characterised by the riffs of the two guitarists. Hard-hitting yet thoroughly melodic riffs open ‘Froken Raket’. This track is faster than the previous two. The guitars and drums are the driving forces pushing the rocket girl forward. And it features a crowd-pleasing chorus. Things then settle down with the rhythmic ‘Det Sager Boom!’, complete with superb guitar melodies and solos. ‘En Gang Ar Ingen Gang’ (English: ‘Once is never’) kicks off with some staccato guitar riffs. Then the two guitarists unleash a storm of riffs. Zdravko Zizmond is accompanied by his bandmates with melodic harmonies. The following track, ‘Rocken Lever’, proves that ‘The Rock is alive’. Ström, of course, also ensure this with their Rock’n’Roll. Once again with a simple and catchy chorus, so that even fans who don’t speak Swedish can quickly sing along. With ‘Mamma Sa’ we shift back into high-speed territory. The singer’s voice sounds a touch more raspy and is driven on by drummer Tomas Salonen. ‘Din Tid Kommer’ kicks off with a bass line, with guitar riffs kicking in later. The bass, however, remains at the forefront. The Swedes also deliver their rousing Hard Rock with the two closing tracks, ‘Salut’ and ‘Det Ar Okej’.
‘More STRÖM for the people! Always!’ This slogan appears in the press release. And that is exactly what Ström deliver on their third album: uncompromising Hard Rock. The Swedes are consistently continuing along the path they set out on four years ago with their debut album.
