As a reviewer you always have a difficult time with underground bands. Information is rare. You won’t find too much on the internet either. The little that is known. The trio comes from Groß-Umstadt, a municipality in southern Hessen. And were obviously founded in 2018. In December, the debut EP “Absinthe” was released. That’s it. So, let’s get an impression of this first work.

When you hear Hessen, you inevitably think of Tobias Sammet (Avantasia, Edguy). But Black Parable have nothing to do with Melodic Fun or Pop Metal. The opener “Black Parable” already proves that. What a thundering bass, what sophisticated drumming, progressive rhythm changes and an almost hypnotic vocal. Metal with a dash of grunge. Difficult to describe, you just have to listen. On “The Life Inside”, the trio just knocks us out with the riffs. For this, the double bass drives the musician. Here, too, the fat bass and the slightly scratchy vocals shape the sound. On “Hollow”, groovy guitars hit on your ears. After so much boisterous power, of course, you also need a resting point. And that’s what the title song delivers – the mostly ballad-like “Absinthe”. However, not consistently designed as a “real” ballad, you can hear harder and faster passages here. For me, this song is the highlight of the EP, as it impressively underlines the diversity and quality of the three musicians.

Black Parable are an unpolished diamond in the rough. This successful debut makes you want more. I hope we can hear a lot more from this band in the future.
