Brazil is a stronghold of Metal. Bands like Nervosa, Almah, Sepultura or Angra come from the South American country. But Brazil also has a lot to offer across the board, in every genre imaginable. The Melodic Metal band Lasting Maze was founded in 2014. Two years later, the debut EP “Silent Spring” was released. Three singles followed. These three songs and two new ones have now been combined on the second EP “Thunder”, which was released in April.

The EP starts with the title track “Thunder”. After a half-minute piano intro, a classic Melodic Metal song in the midtempo range is heard. Fortunately, Grazy Mesquita does without operatic vocals. Instead, Pedro Anselmo intersperses hard riffs. Drums and bass provide a lot of pressure from the speakers. The obligatory guitar solo is not missing either, filigree yet melodic. “Greatest Sin” is a bit less playful. Here the double bass is driving. Nevertheless, the musicians don’t leave the midtempo area. “To The Wishes” has more of a Symphonic touch again, thanks to piano and synth strings. And the keyboard carpets underpin the metal sound for almost the entire playing time. At the beginning of “Kosmos” they are also strongly emphasised, so that a little industrial feeling arises. But later, the quartet starts rocking again. In the final song “Destiny (Carry On)”, the vocals are audibly distorted, so that Alternative Industrial influences are also audible.

On the cover, the red-haired singer can be seen as a thunder goddess. Her singing is also the highlight of the EP. I don’t like the omnipresent synth sounds as much. For this, there are slight reductions in the rating. But the rhythm section makes up for it a little. “Thunder” is an EP worth listening to, with many good riffs and guitar solos. The production is powerful. But there is still room for improvement in the musical realisation.
