Nergard
Live In Kalvåa
Out: April 14th, 2023
Playing time: 30:49
The band is named after guitarist and bassist Andreas Nergård from Norway. He founded the band in 2010. Since then, there have probably been various line-up changes. The current line-up was completed in 2022. In the meantime, Nergard are no longer a purely Norwegian band. Members from the UK and Sweden can now be found in the line-up. Nevertheless, three albums two EPs and countless singles have been released during this time. In 2018, the debut album “Memorial For A Wish” was re-released, with one additional song. The newest offering is the live album “Live In Kalvåa”.
“Hell On Earth” kicks off the set without any further ado. All three singers show their skills here. Finest Power Metal in the style of the eighties. And that’s exactly how it continues with “Where No One Would Shed A Tear”. With a great guitar solo. And double bass attacks. “Angels” sounds calmer. There is more emphasis on beautiful melodies. “Light And Shadows” is a bit rougher again and tends towards NWOBHM. Of course, a ballad should not be missing, and it comes with “On Through The Storm”. Excellent vocal performances, accompanied by piano sounds and keyboard carpets. The hymn “From The Cradle To The Grave” is the end of this EP.
That “Live In Kalvåa” is a live recording can only be heard at the applause at the end of each song. Otherwise, the sound is just too plain. Audience reactions during the songs? Not at all. Was the recording too heavily post-edited in the studio? Anyway, I like the EP. For fans of Kamelot, Nightwish, Helloween you can read in the promo email. That’s exactly what it is.
