He is the guitarist of the Italian Power Metal band Mastercastle. And he is also on the road as a solo artist, Pier Gonella. With “667” he has already released his second solo album. Most of the instrumental songs were written by him.

Pier Gonella recently released a video clip for the opener “Margarita”. Here you can see him and his two comrades-in-arms playing in a beautiful mountainous creek landscape. Of course, the performance of the master is the centre of attention. And for those who feared a wild guitar tinkering here, I can calm you down. There is a lot of emphasis on beautiful melodies. Easy-going rock music. The title song “667” is a bit more rocky, but no less melodic. And so it goes on. Relaxed Melodic Rock, sometimes a bit calmer like “Holy Water” or tending towards Metal (“Rock The Galaxy”). Even an instrumental ballad (“Unforgettable”) can be heard. “Make It Rock” spreads a touch of country rock at the beginning. This is also the only song where vocals can be heard. In the form of a chorus. With “Gonzo Goes To Pittburg” there is once again the full Rock blast. Before the quiet, semi-ballad “Planet For Sale” closes the album.

Instrumental albums, especially by guitarists, are often problematic because the guitarist wants to show off all his fingering skills. But you don’t hear this self-enlightenment” on “667”. Pier Gonella delivers well-made Melodic Rock music, in which his guitar playing is the centre of attention. But also the beautiful and catchy melodic lines. Do you miss the vocals? Yes, a little. But as long as the guitar basically takes over the singing part, you can get over that.
