Aeonian Sorrow
From The Shadows
Out: March 31st, 2025
Playing time: 32:06
Aeonian Sorrow are a Greek Finnish Doom Metal band, founded in 2015 by singer Gogo Melone. From the beginning, musicians from both countries were part of the band line-up. Three years later, the debut album ‘Into the Eternity A Moment We Are’ was released. The EP ‘A Life Without’ followed in 2020. And then album number two ‘Katara’ in 2023. And it continues in this rhythm. Another EP, ‘From The Shadows’, was released in March. Although both EPs could almost be categorised as a shorter album with a playing time of more than thirty minutes. Only the number of songs (four each) justifies the categorisation as an EP. I was able to see the band live at headCRASH in Hamburg in 2019, as the opener for Swallow The Sun. Gogo is also a digital graphic designer and has already designed album covers for a number of bands. So, it goes without saying that the cover for this EP was also designed by her.
The words spoken in Greek on the opener ‘Harbinger Of Ruin’ have a menacing effect.
Του κάτω κόσμου οι φωνές
Μαρτυρικά θρηνούνε
In English:
The voices of the underworld
The mourning of the martyrs
And these mourning chants can be heard in the background. After about one minute you can hear hard guitar riffs underlaid by keyboard tapestries. Add to this the growls of Joel Notkonen. A little later you hear the beguiling vocals of Gogo Melone. Again and again alternating with angry growls. ‘Whispers In The Dark’ starts with spherical sounds before powerful riffs spread a dark Doom atmosphere. The abysmally evil growls dominate at first. Only later do the growls and the elf-like female vocals form a duet. The drums booming along. ‘Your Blackened Forest’ sounds less gloomy at the beginning. Mainly thanks to Gogo’s clear vocals. However, this is then counteracted by Joel’s growls. There is a similar contrast between the clean guitars and keyboards on the one hand and the dark guitar riffs and heavy drumming on the other. The literally bubbling keyboard melodies at the beginning of ‘Mist Of Oblivion’ spread some confidence. But as soon as the heavy Doom sounds of the guitars kick in, the darkness spreads again. This is supported by the evil growls. The drums boom mercilessly again, contrasting with the beguiling vocals of Gogo Melone.
‘From The Shadows’ offers exactly what the album title promises. Time and again, the musicians step out of the Doom shadows and spread a more optimistic mood. Who ultimately wins the competition between shadow and light remains to be seen. I hear small advantages in favour of the darker side. Doom Metal is celebrated to perfection here. But that’s all I’m used to from Aeonian Sorrow so far.
