Crimson Day is a Finnish Heavy Metal band, formed in 2013 in Tampere by bassist Jesse ‘Kämy’ Kämäräinen.
Blending crushing riffs, atmospheric depth, and emotionally charged songwriting, Dark Dimension marks a bold new chapter for the band.
This is what the press release for their latest album says. It is the band’s fourth album. In addition, there is the self-titled EP from the year they formed and a huge number of singles. A significant change took place in 2020. Milka Uusitalo, a female vocalist, took over the microphone from Valtteri Heiskanen. The new singer was introduced to fans with two new singles and accompanying videos (“Raising the Fury” and “Black as the Heavens Above”).
‘War Machine’ kicks off with a lively guitar melody backed by drums, where the volume gradually increases. Then a storm of riffs bursts forth, and frontwoman Milka Uusitalo lets out her first high-pitched Metal scream. Her vocals have a powerful, raspy edge, which fits the heavy sound perfectly. A slightly dissonant guitar solo crowns the song. It ends just as it began, with a high-pitched scream. A powerful bass line opens ‘False Prophet’. What follows is a punchy Metal anthem. The vocals are far less raspy for long stretches. The guitar solos are not neglected either. Guitarist Janne Rantanen contributes some harsh vocals. On ‘The Outsider’, drummer Janne Ollikainen drives his bandmates on. Milka unleashes her raspy voice again but often switches to clean vocals. ‘Dark Dimension’ is a high-speed blast. Consequently, the riffs are played at breakneck speed. Milka has no trouble keeping up with this tempo. Later, bassist Jesse Kämäräinen pushes himself forward. Added to this are menacing screams from both Milka Uusitalo and Janne Rantanen. A scream duet, so to speak. ‘Song of Fire’ follows as the next Metal anthem. With ‘Black Wolves’ Night’, the band switches back to high-speed mode. The drums drive the rhythm, at times with double bass attacks, whilst the guitars gallop along. Added to this is an incredible guitar solo, and Milka lets out high-pitched screams. After so much boundless energy, a breather is needed. And this comes in the form of the power ballad ‘Give Me The Pain’. The singer occasionally shows her more contemplative side. Keyboard sounds and harshly spoken words introduce ‘Hexed’. Despite the intense, raspy vocals, this is a catchy, anthemic Metal song. Once again, a short bass solo can be heard before Milka Uusitalo lets rip with some nasty screams. On ‘The Valleys Of Oblivion’, the guitars and vocals sound a bit frantic at times, whilst the chorus comes across as very harmonious. The album concludes with the epic Metal anthem ‘The Winter Is Here To Stay’.
With ‘Dark Dimension’, Crimson Day have delivered a true Heavy Metal masterpiece. Singer Milka Uusitalo is a real stroke of luck. Her vocal range is impressive; from high-pitched and nasty screams to raspy, screeching vocals and seductive clean singing, she masters everything. Her bandmates on the instruments push her to vocal peak performance. The sound is powerful and fresh.
