Freeze the Fall are an integral part of the dynamic Rock scene of Kelowna (British Columbia) in Western Canada. All three members are still in their teens, between 16 and 17 years young. The band was founded in 2023 and their breakthrough in their home country came when they released The Warning cover ‘Evolve’. The first single “Glitch” was published in February 2024. This was followed a few months later by the debut EP ‘Thrones’ with six songs (July 2024). Only eleven months later, the follow-up EP “The Red Garden” is ready.

‘Denial’ is the intro to the album. After a few spherical sounds, the drums and guitars kick in. This one-minute introduction could be dispensed with, especially on an EP. The transition to ‘Rot’ is abrupt. Riffs immediately bang out of the speakers. Quinn Mitzel’s vocals alternate between harsh and beguiling. Later, the riffs sound a little weird. The drums boom along with it. ‘Hypothermia’ starts a little more quietly. Even after that, the mid-tempo range is not abandoned. The refrain is very catchy. Quinn and Aria harmonise well with each other vocally. I have no idea what the song title ‘VHS’ refers to. Spontaneously, I thought of the good old VHS cassette. But that was long before the time of the three musicians. In the video for the song, however, you can actually see such a cassette being inserted into a player. And then we find ourselves in the middle of a splatter film. Musically, they accordingly rock out really hard. At least instrumentally, with the hard riffs and the banging drums. The vocals are dark. Here, too, the refrain is catchy and invites you to sing along. ‘Aurora’ starts with heavy drumming before slightly distorted riffs are added later. The vocals move into somewhat deeper pitched realms. But the trio can also master ballads, as they prove at the beginning of ‘Oubliette’. Quiet guitars, bass and drums accompany the initially beguiling vocals. Later, a little more pressure is added. The song is obviously sung (at least in part) in French. Well, that’s hardly surprising, as this French word stands for a dungeon that is only accessible via a hatch in the ceiling. Later, in keeping with the theme, it becomes a hard, dark Rock song. Therefore, ‘Lace’ is a contemplative piano ballad throughout. Once again, the singers’ voices are beguiling and very sensual.

Freeze the Fall remind me a lot of the aforementioned Mexican girl trio. Despite their youth, their compositions sound extremely mature. Every now and then we listeners are taken into a world of scary or horror. An EP worth listening to and musically varied.
