After spending many years playing, recording, and touring as a drummer in several different bands to varying degrees of success, Austin Koll went into the studio in 2019 with a small clutch of songs in hand. Looking to shed the dependencies interlaced with working within a collective, it was an exploratory proof of concept endeavour. The resulting tracks proved incentive enough to continue the pursuit of self-contained artistic expression. Adopting the moniker ‘GYAOS:DIABOLICAL’ to represent this rising phoenix and musical rebirth, Austin continues on, pursuing this ‘crime of passion’: the realization of unconstrained expression. Drawing inspiration from pioneering crossover thrash bands such as CRYPTIC SLAUGHTER and THE CRUMBSUCKERS, as well as newer bands such as IRON REAGAN and DEAD CROSS, GYAOS:DIABOLICAL is heavily steeped in the fundamental elements of thrash: aggression, driving rhythms, and outrage. Along with, blending in elements from the tumultuous chaos turbines of digital hardcore bands such as ATARI TEENAGE RIOT and EC8OR, with the raw, analogue atmospheric aesthetics of black metal.
Exuding a ferocious intensity, GYAOS:DIABOLICAL’s fierce new album In Accordance With The Prophecy was released on January 13th, 2023. Drawing together extremes of thrash with elements of black metal, the album contains a ruthless portrayal of the trials and tribulations emerging from the systematic eradication of individual autonomy and thought.
Kicking off with “DESTROY 2000 YEARS OF CULTURE”, a cover of the 1996 release by ATARI TEENAGE RIOT, GYAOS:DIABOLICAL unleashes a storm of speed, heavy rhythms and demonic harsh vocals. Included as the lyrical themes of the track align with the ideology of GYAOS:DIABOLICAL, this explosive opener sets the tone for the album. Relentless aggression bleeds through the album, “FIGHT OR DIE” continues the incessant fast pace with high momentum and an eerie sense of the foreboding in its exploration of inner conflict and need to rally against injustice. Delving into darker realms, “SHADOW IS THE DAMNED” brings a darkening gloom through descending patterns, contrasting groove riffs and utterly low tones. The musicality reflects the murkiness of a growing social divide and willingness to cast out those who see through the hypocrisy. Journeying through the poignant divides, the album concludes with the eerie “KATAHDIN IS RISEN”. A homage to the 1979 John Frankenheimer monster movie Prophecy, the album leaves behind the chilling notion that perhaps fact and fiction are no longer so easily disconnected.
