Kingcrown from Nice (France) have been around since 2015, initially under the name “Öblivïon” until 2018. They then changed their name. The correct spelling is still a bit unclear. In my review of ‘Nova Atlantis’ I still used ‘KingCrown’. Perhaps that’s how it was written in the press release at the time. I wasn’t 100 per cent convinced by the power metal on the album. If you count “Resilience” (released under the name ‘Öblivïon’), then ‘Moonfall’ is the band’s fifth album. It was mixed and mastered by Simone Mularoni at his Domination Studio.

The album kicks off with the high-energy title track ‘Moonfall’. A beautiful melody meets multi-faceted, slightly raspy vocals. Things become even more melodic, yet also more rhythmic, on ‘Nothing’. It took a few years for the musicians to pen ‘We Are Kingcrown’, a band anthem tailor-made for them. Thanks to its catchiness, rousing melody and sing-along chorus, this is set to become one of the highlights of their live performances. And what they so impressively described with the line ‘We are Metal, we are Kingdrown’ is the concept behind the following track, ‘A Thousand Years’. This is where things really kick off. The vocals also sound a bit rougher here. This continues on ‘Rise Of The Machines’. Helloween send their regards. Heavy riffs, a fast tempo and a sing-along chorus make ‘All United’ another highlight. The epic ‘Lost Horizon’ also delivers a magnificent chorus. Although the French band could certainly be a bit more sparing with the synths. ‘Oblivion Resilience’ is arguably the catchiest track on the album, without pandering to the mainstream. Next up is ‘Back To The 80’s’. Here, Kingcrown pay homage to the era to which they clearly owe their musical socialisation. The twin guitars and the polyphonic backing vocals really come into their own. To round things off, the anthem ‘Beyond The Stars’ offers plenty of epic grandeur.

In my opinion, there’s a much greater sense of originality on ‘Moonfall’. This enhances the overall sound and, consequently, the listening experience. Simone Mularoni has done a great job on the production, ensuring a rich, clear sound. Thumbs up!
