Comaniac ‘Holodox’

Album Review By Adam McCann

Independent Release/Thrash Metal

There is no doubt that Comaniac hit the ground running; the Swiss thrash band smashed expectations and their first two albums were received more than warmly. Since the release of ‘Instruction for Destruction’ in 2017, Comaniac have been consolidating their position and are now poised to release their third studio album ‘Holodox’.

As expected, ‘Holodox’ keeps their sound the way we like it with the snarling vocals of Jonas Schmid cutting through the mix over driving staccato riffs and pummelling rhythms with tracks such as ‘Art is Dead’, ‘Narcotic Clan’ and ‘Bittersweet’ having all the energy of Voivod, Coroner and Angelus Apatrida intercutting with Poltergeist, Battalion and Wrathchild America. Yet, there is a slight underlying edge to ‘Holodox’ which harks back to Metallica in their prime, making this album exceptionally accessible, particularly during ‘Head of the Snake’, a song that wouldn’t be so out of place on ‘Ride the Lightning’ or ‘Master of Puppets’.

However, with ‘Holodox’, there isn’t anything that hasn’t been heard before, Comaniac do not break new ground or stray too far from their comfort zone. But the question is, why would they? The band are very good at what they do and because of it, they have once again delivered a solid thrash album that fans of the genre are guaranteed to enjoy.
