It’s interesting what pithy words you can read in some press releases.
Elettra Storm is the brand new Power Metal sensation: featuring the talented and gorgeous Crystal Emiliani on vocals and supported by top-notch musicians.
Elettra Storm were founded by the co-founder of SinHeresY, keyboardist and bassist Davide Sportiello. Despite all the euphoria, however, the founding date was forgotten. The band’s first signs of life on social media (Facebook, Instagram) date back to the end of November. So, it seems reasonable to assume that the band was somehow founded in the same year. All the more surprising that the debut album “Powerlords” is already finished. The release is planned for February 2024.
“Higher Than The Stars” gets off to a powerful start right from the beginning. Fortunately, Crystal Emiliani sings with a powerful voice in the mid-pitch range. And drummer Matteo Norbedo hits his drums like there’s no tomorrow. The riffs just bang around your ears and fast guitar melodies complete the sound. This continues with “Redemption”. Elettra Storm step on the throttle. Here Francis D. Mary joins in as Crystal’s vocal partner. And it was predictable that “Origin Of Dreams” would also be in the high-speed range. However, the rhythm and melody are varied here. The chorus invites you to sing along. The tempo is slowed down a little on the title track “Powerlords”. At least at the beginning. The keyboards sometimes take centre stage. And again, you can quickly sing along to the chorus. And towards the end it gets quieter again, with plucked guitars. It makes perfect sense that there has to be a point of calm after such an explosive discharge of energy. The power ballad “Alone” comes just in time. The tempo is also slowed down a little on “Heirs Of The Descent”. A great Power Metal anthem. Then “Sacrifice Of Angels” really gets going again. Another anthem follows with “Spirit Of The Moon”. But the final song “Voices In The Wind” is high-speed again, with anthemic elements.
After the first four songs, you might think that “Powerlords” is an album that is all about wild banging and setting new BPM records. But fortunately, it becomes more varied after that, with power ballads and anthems. Elettra Storm show a good touch for melodic arcs. The vocal duo Crystal Emiliani / Francis D. Mary harmonise very well together. And the praise “first-class musicians” from the press release can be fully emphasised. As is usual with many Italian bands, hectic keyboard passages are often included. And these are sometimes a little annoying. All in all, we can hear a successful debut album here.
