Rebirth are back. The symphonic metal band from the northern Italian metropolis of Milan have released a new EP in May. Fifteen years after the last EP “Frozen Moments”. A lot has happened in the meantime, at least in the line-up. Mainly on the microphone. On Encyclopaedia Metallum the current band status is “Unknown”. The information about the band ends sometime in the year 2015/2016. The only thing that is certain is that the band was founded in 1998 by school friends. In the early days Rebirth played Gothic Metal with classical and medieval influences. With the classic role distribution “Beauty and the Beast”. At least with the latter is obviously over. For some years now, Martina Russo has taken over the solo position at the microphone with her lyrical soprano.

Shortly after the first piano and string sounds of “Enter The Storm”, you can enjoy the voice of the new singer. Sure, her voice is soprano, but you don’t hear the usual opera singing. To some extent I am reminded of Helena Iren Michaelson (Imperia). But Rebirth play harder here. The riffs just bang out of the speakers. Even if, in contrast to the past, they only come from one guitarist. “Devotion” is a little quieter, although here the drums also provide a lot of sound pressure as well. In addition, discreet, song-serving (synth) orchestration. The Italians also hold back on “Blessing In Disguise”. A beautiful ballad. The singer can impressively demonstrate her skills here. Also “Sinners is more in the midtempo range. Towards the end, a beautiful guitar solo can be heard. With the last song “Lost”, the musicians pick up speed once again. I especially like the vibrato in Martina’s voice. I have heard something similar from another Italian singer so far. Anna Holtz (Desdæmona), but even more pronounced.

“Storm” is a more than successful comeback. I confess, unfortunately I don’t know the band’s early work. So I could listen to the EP without any prejudice. It is extremely positive that Rebirth have left behind the interplay of sugary sweet female vocals and angry growls. This has often been overused by many bands in recent years. The orchestrations don’t become too much on the EP either. That makes you want more. How about a full epic length album then?
