Disillusive Play hail from Athens, the capital of Greece. The band’s music can be classified as Hard/Heavy and Melodic Progressive Rock. Formed in 2014, the debut album “Open Arms” was not released until 2018. Another five years later, “Songs For The Non-Existent” is completed.

Finally, an album that doesn’t need an intro. Instead, the Greeks go straight into full throttle with “Enough” after a few spoken words. Powerful and melodic, that’s how you can describe the sound. Antigoni Kalamara has a slightly scratchy Rock voice. And she can also sing enchantingly.  So, no excursion into Opera Metal. But filigree guitar work. “Why” picks up speed a little. But it remains melodic. With hard riffs. And quickly played guitar hooks. Antigoni throws in short high Metal screams. And the rhythm change during the guitar solo provides a slight Progressive touch. “Sisyphus” stomps quietly along. Here the riffs dominate over long stretches. It goes on like this, lots of melody, midtempo riffing, choruses to sing along to, like in “Life Scars” or “The Dreamer”. Just with “Make Them All Feel Good” the tempo is partly increased again, also thanks to the use of the Double Bass. With “Love Or Fear” follows a beautiful power ballad. On “Parallel Lives” you can hear Antogoni in a duet with Marios Karanastasis (Silent Wedding). Both voices fit very well together. There is also a guest appearance on “Queen of the Night”. This time by Panagiotis Bourazanis on bass, Bob Katsionis on keyboards and Iliana Tsakiraki (Enemy of Reality) as background singer. Especially Panagiotis Bourazanis brings a new colour to the sound with his jazz-inspired bass line. But also, the funky guitars. After this midtempo song, the tempo is slightly increased again with “Demons Glove”. The album ends with the pop-like “We Will Rise”.

“Songs For The Non-Existent” is a solid second album by Disillusive Play. The songs, mostly played in midtempo, score especially with beautiful melody leads and pleasing guitar solos. Above all, of course, Antigoni Kalamara’s vocals are enthroned. There is not a bad song. But also, no absolute smash hit. There is not too much of the ” Progressive” mentioned at the beginning. But I personally don’t miss it either.
