Deithesis are an Irish Heavy Metal band from County Louth on the border with Northern Ireland. Founded in 2020, the musicians are inspired by the Dark Heavy Metal of Black Sabbath, the thrash of Metallica and Megadeth, the doubled guitars of Iron Maiden and Thin Lizzy and the Epic Doom of bands like Candlemass and Solitude Aeturnus. Sounds interesting. And tempts you to listen to it.

The intro ‘Harbinger’ starts with guitar licks that resound from both stereo channels. But does it really have to be almost two and a half minutes long? The repetitions get boring in the long run. Absolutely dispensable! The first regular song, ‘Unseen’, is more Classic Heavy Metal. Thanks to the heavy riffs that can be heard. And spread a slightly doomy atmosphere. Mixed with some light thrash sprinkles. The guitar solo is well-intentioned but unfortunately also somewhat unimaginative. Overlong intros? There are also individual songs, such as ‘Beyond Tomorrow’. Just guitars and some vocals. And that for almost one minute. After that, the guitar riffs once again spread a Doom atmosphere. Sure, the Irish want to spread a touch of Black Sabbath here. But they don’t come close to the musical performance of the band of the Prince of Darkness, neither musically nor vocally. Unfortunately, the title track ‘Equilibrium’ hardly differs from its predecessors in its structure. Heavy, sustained riffs are familiar and can also be heard on ‘Virtue’. But then the tempo picks up. The riffs also seem more varied. This makes the song stand out positively from the rest. And again, an intro introduces a song, this time ‘Once Forsaken’. And again, for about a minute. Then there are the familiar heavy mid-tempo riffs again. This doesn’t change much on ‘Sanctity’.  Only ‘Beckon Tragedy’ increases the tempo again. With a guitar solo that’s not bad at all. There you go, the Irish can do it.

‘Equilibrium’ is an album with light and shade. Certainly, we hear a lot of heavy Doom Metal riffs. The Irish endeavour to play Epic Doom of the Black Sabbath brand. For long stretches, however, the whole thing seems rather lengthy and lacking in variety. However, Deithesis can definitely build on the two highlighted songs ‘Virtue’ and ‘Beckon Tragedy’. There is still a lot of room for improvement.
