For twenty-five years now, they have been bringing the Hard Rock vibes of the 70s and 80s to concert halls. We are talking about Voodoo Highway from the Italian city of Ferrara (Emilia-Romagna region). Their latest studio album, ‘Dawn Before The Storm’, was released last year after a seven-year hiatus. Although demo versions from 2012 can be heard here, the Italians are now following up with a live album. The songs were recorded during their reunion show at the RockaFE Festival in Ferrara in June this year.

Contrary to the title, the short introductory track ‘This Is Rock’n’Roll, Wankers!’ is more of a mixture of Rock’n’Roll and Hard Rock in the style of the eighties. Thanks mainly to the extensive use of the Hammond organ and the musical competition between the Hammond and the guitar, the balance tips towards Hard Rock. This can also be heard in ‘Gasoline Woman’. Added to this is a slightly bluesy sounding guitar. Later, the bass booms. The live sound is cleanly captured and mixed with a powerful sound. In ‘Midnight Hour’, there is a slight increase in tempo. The song is a little more rock oriented. Voodoo Highway also celebrates the glorious eighties in the following songs, such as ‘NY Dancer’, ‘Till It Bleeds’ and the bonus track ‘Running Around’. In between, there’s an ‘wow effect’: the intro to ‘To Ride The Tide’ sounds incredibly familiar to me. It sounds a bit like the classic ‘Perfect Strangers’ by Deep Purple. It’s wonderful how the Hammond organ wafts here. But don’t worry, there’s no attempt to quote this super song throughout the entire playing time. But even the subtle hint of this musical theme is well done.

During this thirty-minute live recording, the Italians celebrate straightforward 1980s Hard Rock. Massimiliano Sabbadini in particular scores here with his Hammond. You might think Jon Lord (or Don Airey) were on stage. The competition between the Hammond and the guitar can also be heard time and again. However, the guitar is often overshadowed by the Hammond. Nevertheless, this is a live album that fans of Deep Purple and Uriah Heep should definitely listen to. The time has come for a studio album with new song material.
