Founded in 2012 on the banks of the Kura River in Tbilisi, Georgia, Ennui have released four studio albums to date. But almost eight years have passed between their last album, ‘End of the Circle,’ and their current release, ‘Qroba ’. The masters of Funeral Doom are thus celebrating their comeback. Only guitarist, bassist and singer David Unsaved and guitarist Serge Shengelia have been with the band since the beginning. The line-up is remarkable. Up to four guitars obviously define the sound.
The album kicks off with ‘Antinatalism’ and its surprisingly clear guitar chords. But, in keeping with the genre, it is naturally very calm. Later on, equally calm hard riffs can be heard. The drums naturally follow this up. Then, abysmally evil growls boom out of the loudspeaker. I don’t want to comment on the negative meaning of the title. Anyone who is interested can read about it on the internet. In ‘Becoming Void’, you can hear how the musicians describe emptiness, nothingness, musically. Keyboard layers are initially laid over guitar chords. But here, too, the brute force of heavy guitar walls and growls that could come from the deepest depths of hell kicks in. ‘Decima’ seems to delve into Roman/Greek mythology. The Greek equivalent Lachesis is one of the three Moirai (goddesses of fate). So this is what it sounds like when fate strikes. ‘Down To The Stars’ starts with synth playing, which is immediately accompanied by melancholic riffs. ‘Mokvda Mze’ is the final song on the album. I read somewhere that the music is supposed to describe the beauty of disappearance. Well, whether that’s really beautiful is open to question. At least the whole thing seems somehow majestic.
‘Qroba’ is a typical Funeral Death/Doom album. Packed with melancholic, slow-paced melodies. Filled with lots of bitterly angry growls. So it fits in well with the rather dreary winter weather we’re currently experiencing. But you don’t necessarily have to listen to it in winter. Fans of the genre can also enjoy it at other times of the year. However, if you’re feeling really down, listening to it might give you new strength. So scream out all your frustration.
