Demonessa is a heavy metal band from Tampere, Finland, carving its path with pure power and attitude. Formed in 2019, the band combines the explosive force of 80’s heavy metal with the spectacle of glam metal creating an experience that must be witnessed live.
That’s pretty much all the promotional email for the band’s debut album, ‘Wild N’ Loud’, reveals about them. With this album, Demonessa are ready to “conquer the world”. All the songs reflect the Heavy Metal of the 80s. From stadium anthems and fast-paced hits to soulful ballads, the entire spectrum of classic Heavy Metal is represented. That sounds exciting and has me really looking forward to it.
A brief acoustic guitar intro lasting just under a minute sets the scene for ‘Till Death Do Us Part’. But then the Finns go full throttle. Blistering guitar riffs and driving drums push singer Senja Kääriäinen on, who also lets out the now and then high-pitched Metal Scream. With ‘High Voltage Renegade’, the title itself reflects the musical concept. The musicians are, quite literally, under great pressure. Once again, drummer Jones Tervas drives his bandmates on, ensuring that the guitar solos are played at breakneck speed. ‘M.A.D.’ begins with heavily distorted and electronically modified guitars. Before the full force of the rhythm section kicks in here too. Senja sings a little more harshly and is supported by choir singing on the refrain. The title track ‘Wild N’ Loud’ is also part of the concept. Demonessa play wild and loud. However, this isn’t limited to just this one song. Clean guitars can be heard at the start of the power ballad “Queen Of Pain”. With this, Demonessa take a well-deserved breather. Acoustic sections alternate with heavy guitar passages. This allows the singer to showcase her full vocal range. ‘Livin’ Out Of Spite’ kicks off from the very first tone. The anthemic ‘Slowly Losing My Mind’ is then somewhat calmer overall and is dominated by heavy riffs and clear vocals. On ‘In Decay’, there are once again rapid guitar runs to feast on. Singer Senja Kääriäinen keeps up with the fast pace with ease. A powerful bass line and heavily distorted guitars kick off ‘In The Depths Of Hell You’ll Burn’. After a quiet start, the guitars build up the intensity. The song is a little calmer than some of the previous ones. But with hardly any less intensity. ‘We Rule The Night’ is a double-bass-driven Power Metal track, featuring a melodic chorus and an outstanding guitar solo. Things take a more contemplative turn with ‘I Stand Alone’, a ballad that invites you to dream. At times, Senja’s voice sounds fragile. To round things off, ‘A Knife To A Gunfight’ blasts classic, Judas Priest-inspired Heavy Metal riffs from the speakers. The crowning glory is a formidable twin-guitar solo.
The press release didn’t overpromise. On ‘Wild N’ Loud’, Demonessa capture the spirit of 80s Heavy Metal. Varied songwriting meets outstanding musicians.
